Late fees are a budget pattern
People with ADHD can end up paying fees even when the money is available. A bill gets opened but not paid, a reminder appears at the wrong time, or the final submit button never gets clicked.
If this happens more than once, treat it as a system problem rather than a character flaw. Late fees deserve their own prevention routine.
Manage deadlines as windows, not single dates
A reminder on the due date may be too late. For high-cost deadlines, use a window: seven days before, three days before, and the day of the deadline.
Bills, taxes, insurance paperwork, exams, and appointments are worth placing in both your calendar and your budget routine.
Autopay still needs a checkup
Autopay helps, but it is not foolproof. Expired cards, wrong account numbers, failed payments, and unread emails can still create late fees.
Once a month, verify that the important automatic payments actually went through. Automation works best when it includes a lightweight review.
